, whether they actually believe there's a moral equivalency there or they don't and they're using it for political purposes. either way, whichever it is, this is not just bad domestic politics for the president, and it is and they know it, for a variety of reasons, including it takes him off the economy and divides him from democrats, which is a big problem on a range of issues, but i almost resist talking about this as a political issue. this is a national security crisis. both of these issues are. you have general petraeus getting involved in a domestic matter of the first amendment issue shows the extraordinary extent to which people in the military are -- men and women overseas think this is a big enough deal, and to have it to be brought into domestic politics and inflamed by republicans, again, out of principle, maybe, out of political purposes maybe, whatever the reason is really a national and international tragedy. and unfortunately the president, for a variety of reasons, is too weak on his own to deal with it. >> i think you're right. howard? >> well, sitting in the pre

an incumbent is smaller. they argue if they can bad brush us as corrupt incumbents they can go after the fact nobody knows who they are. >> the point here is that the hour is late and polling is grim. there's not a lot that candidates can do at this late hour. if you're in the south, a democratic candidate in the south, mountain west, lots of regions in this country, your house speaker is in trouble popularity wise. your president is not that popular. the health care reform plan is not that popular. you have a big drag out there and you have to throw whatever you have out there. despite the success of a democratic legislative agenda, not getting traction. you have to throw something out there and it's often a negative ad. >> i'm thinking the old song "strangers in the night" which is the only number one song frank ever sang. it was a hell of a song. you can build a case about a stranger you can't build about an ike skelton or guy or woman who's been around for a while. you can commit infant size. go after the person before anybody knows who they are. christine o'donnell, all we know about her

was the popcorn, but i will have that now. stay with us. good night. >>> whatever else voters were doing today in delaware, new hampshire and new york, they were not blowing kisses at barack obama. of all the surprises and primary elections, nothing tops what happened tonight. this, the last major primary night, has produced the most stunning upset of the year. a lot of examples yet of anti-washington and anti-establishment fever that has gripped much of this republican party. in the state of delaware, christine o'donnell, who just a week ago was considered more than an obscure party shocked the republican political establishment by beating mike castle. 100% of the precincts. 53% of the vote. until perhaps a day or two ago, republicans have every reason to assume that castle would win the nomination and cruise to victory. that would have given the gop a pickup of the same recently held by joe biden. all bets are off. in new hampshire and, leading former state attorney general kelly. a race that has been getting closer by the minute with 35% reporting now lafontaine has 40%. 48% of the front ru
